History of St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kirkby Lonsdale
St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kirkby Lonsdale was officially opened in July 1966 as a chapel of ease to St Mary’s Hornby . It is still linked to St Mary’s today and to Our Lady’s Caton by our priest, Fr Michael Docherty,
The parish has links with Malawi, started by Bishop Hardman who was parish priest of St Joseph’s from 1976-1994. Over the last 25 years, we have helped to build 15 houses, a school and a library in the parishes of Namitembo and Sitima in the diocese of Zomba. September is our fund raising month and we know that every penny we raise goes directly to help the people in Malawi
The congregation of St Josephs has risen in recent years, resulting in renovations to create 12 more seats, a new Sacristy and a meeting room. There is a choir and music at the 9.00 Sunday morning Mass and we extend a warm welcome both to visitors and to new parishioners at the service, and at coffee afterwards.
