Every day we have the capacity both to encounter the love of God and to love as God loves.  Our lives are both physical and spiritual and getting the right balance with both these elements of our lives we can call integrity.  When we sin, we compromise that integrity, and we risk replacing inner peace with turmoil.  Expert as we are in rationalising our actions, it is so easy to become over-anxious when our integrity is off balance.  We know too, that when we successfully fight off temptation and sin our integrity remains intact.  Achieving this balance, this integrity, is a worthy and achievable focus for the first part of our Lenten journey.  Let’s begin this journey asking ourselves: am I at peace or am I anxious?  When I’m honest with myself I soon acknowledge that certain things may have crept into my life that can disturb my integrity.  To make a good Lent, our focus should not just be on what we might give up, or what extra prayers we might say, or even what additional charity we may practice: these are all good and essential things, but if we are to make a really good Lent our focus needs to be on our integrity and on rebalancing our physical and our spiritual lives.
