Rededication of England as the ‘Dowry of Mary’ Sunday, 29 March, 2020

This is an event of National importance for the Catholic Church in England. In advance of this date Monsignor John Armitage and the team from the National Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, are visiting each of the Catholic Cathedrals in England with the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham. Dates for visits to St Peter’s Cathedral, Lancaster are from Thursday 6 February at 6pm through to Saturday midday. There will be a timetable of Holy Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Devotions, Talks on Marian Devotion and an Exhibition. It is hoped that over the period of the visit parishes and schools will organise visits. Details will be sent to parishes early in the New Year.

Sunday, 29 March, 2020 – Rededication of England as the ‘Dowry of Mary’ Mass, St Peter’s Cathedral, Lancaster, 10.30am, main celebrant Bishop Paul Swarbrick.

This will also happen in Westminster Cathedral, in Walsingham, in every Catholic Cathedral, in every parish and in as many homes as possible. Monsignor John Armitage has asked people to prepare spiritually for the rededication by praying the Angelus every day after parish Masses – you may, of course, pray the Angelus at other times if you wish. The traditional times for the Angelus are 6am (or when you get out of bed), 12 noon and 6pm. It is a most suitable prayer to prepare us spiritually for the rededication, recalling, as it does, ‘some essential moments in the History of Salvation, reminding us of Mary’s ‘yes’ to the Angel Gabriel, which undid Eve’s ‘no’ in the Garden of Eden.’ We profess our faith in ‘The Word, who was made flesh, and dwelt amongst us,’ and in his Death and Resurrection, the eternal destiny to which each of us is called in Christ. I hope that many parishes will respond to Monsignor Armitage’s invitation to pray this beautiful prayer after our daily Masses, so that our hearts may be spiritually prepared for this wonderful event. Mary, Our Lady, welcomed the coming of Christ into the world and into our lives. She will help us to do the same.
